What is she up to now?

Believe it or not I enjoy to tat with other tatters but there is a shortage of them so I am on a mission to create more tatters.

This may look like a mess but it is some of the prep I have done for a  free tatting class.  I've  taken a  plastic container apart and made a dozen shuttles wound with 3-4 yds of  cotton thread.  I have added more thread on floss bobbins so the student can choose their own colors.
Those two tatsy shuttles wound with satin/rattail cord will be used for a demonstration of the double stitch and pony beads for a later lesson on adding beads.

I have included a sheet of tatting terms and a free pattern for discussion.
So what do you think, would you start with a ring or a chain.?

  1. Ooooh, well done and good luck. I love that word 'free' too. Personally I'd start with two colours and the chain so they can really 'see' the flip!!! Remember the mantra - right tight, left loose to make the flip happen!!!!

    1. Thank you so much for the comments. I have already taught one class and I did start with a chain. I'll recommend that they don't pick the same colors, I wish I had learned the chain first.

  2. I wish I'd started with the chain and two colors. I start beginners with 2 colors and a chain - they can *see* the flip that way. I usually suggest they pick 2 contrasting colors so if one stitch doesn't flip, they will be able to see it right away.

  3. I start with two colors and a chain. For my free classes I give students a spool (EZ Bob) with 8 yards of ecru, size 3 thread and let them choose another spool in any color they like. They always start with the ecru on the shuttle so their stitches will be the color.

  4. I hope your class goes really well and that you have lots of new tatters!! :)
I personally teach the ring first, but most seem to teach the chain.

  5. I've taught a lot of people, many of them kids. I always do a chain with two colors and it usually works!

  6. Yes, I agree with Bernice,a chain first so the can recognize the knot. I actually have a wonderful chain pattern that I still need to write up for beginners. You are so kind to do this you will be fine fishing for tatters 💛🐝💛

  8. As said before, I found it easier to start new tatters on a chain, with two colours of threads so they can visualize the flip more easily.
Let us know how it goes and if some of your students persevere.
