This star was done using a vintage Coats size 30 thread and measures 3.5 inches or 8.8 cm across.

This is the second pattern in the book  "Frywolitkowe Ozdoby Choinkowe or Tatting Christmas decorations by Laura Bziukiewicz .  

Tatted with a vintage Coats size 30 thread the star measures 4 inches or 10.5 cm.

And this is Star 3, a bit smaller.  I used the same vintage Coats size 30 thread, 2.75 inches or 7.5 cm across.

And so it begins.  This is the first pattern in a book gifted to me this year. (Thanks again JK)

It is a beautiful book called "Frywolitkowe Ozdoby Choinkowe or Tatting Christmas decorations.  When the book was ordered it had a personal greeting to me from the author Laura Bziukiewicz from Poland. There are 26 star or snowflakes, 6 Christmas Baubles, 5 Angels and 3 bells.

With a choice of  40 patterns I've started at the front of the book.  You can use the diagram or follow the written pattern to create the designs in the book.  I chose the diagram and pre-planned so as to climb out to additional rounds using split rings and split chains.  

This star was done using a vintage Coats size 30 thread and measures 4 inches or 10.5 cm across.  I'll try to block these better next time.

Snowflakes

Although I don't know her, these patterns by Renata Niemczyk were posted for free on her Facebook page.  I found the repurposed vintage thread was very soft so the buttons and beads gave the snowflakes structure.  I have made many many of her patterns.

I found that the pattern could accommodate most sizes of buttons, 

 

 

Happy New Year 2023

Another year of tatting, I can see I get just a little bit better with each year.  I saw my largest improvement when I attended my first conference.

In and out snowflakes

It must be ten years ago that I first saw these flakes by Renulek on her blog.  I replaced a tiny ring with a Josephine ring in the top one.  Done in a DMC  size 80 thread they are about 5 cm point to point.  I made these for myself as most of my tatted flakes get given away especially this time of year. 

The rounds are all made separately, with the first two interwoven before you complete the third.

Found this pattern in my files from 5 years ago. It was a free pattern on a blog site,  you can find the link here.  With a few split rings and split chains it can be done moving round to round.  

This flake was done with a DMC 80 thread and measures 2.25 in or 5.5 cm.  I need to try another with a few beads added.

Threes Snowfake

I have been supporting a family member who has been in hospital and we put these little ornaments on the tree at the nursing unit for all to enjoy. I also added tatted Angels and Stars.

A few beads and some Sanbest metallic thread and these beauties were created. Based on Jeanne Lugert design of "Threes Snowflake".  The pattern can be found here. It is easy because you only need to count to three.

 I was also inspired to incorporate some ice drops, but soon realized that I need some practice on the  patterns.  Even so they look great on a tree.  

Icy Blue

Just me using up more chandelier crystals.  The designer is  Marie McCurry, Icy Blue Snowflake.  I used a Sanbest silver thread with blue seed beads and added a simple chandelier crystal to the center.

 If you need practice with bead placement this is the perfect project.  Designed by Marie McCurry of WestPineCreations.  She now has a sales page with instructions available here. 

The pattern works up quickly and depending on the size of thread will determine the size of the snowflake. I used seed beads and my neverending spool of Wonderfil Spagetti thread.

First Snowflake

 

No, not my first but one designed by Grace Tan called First Snowflake and Variation which you can find here.  It works up fast and easy.  I did it in one pass using a split chain.  I think it needs some beads, so 60 on the shuttle to cover the picots on the final ring and another 18 on the shuttle for every picot except joining.

Inga Madsen

 

Here is a lovely snowflake I received from Inga Madsen  She has a new tatting book "Christmas Decorations in Tatting" and was matched with me in a tatting exchange arranged the The Fringe Element Tatters.  The snowflake made its way from Denmark to me in Canada. Thanks Inga, this one will go on my holiday tree.

Star Motif

 This is Star Motif from the pamphlet Tatting by Penelope Book 3. The picture is at the beginning of the book but the instructions are at the end.  I was inspired by this motif when I first learned to tat and will admit that I COPY TATTED it.  It was a time before I learned to read patterns so I counted stitches.  I felt so bad that I worked to obtain the pattern legally and now have done that and along the way also supported many tatting artists by purchasing shuttles, books and thread.  

I love to tat this pattern.  I do it with two shuttles, using split rings and a split chain to climb to the next round. I tat this at least once a year.  The top pattern is done in a size 80 vintage thread and woks out to 4.25 inches.  It has made its way to Europe in a tatting exchange.  The lower one was done with Wonderfil thread, I made two Wonderfil motifs which will be given away in a local exchange later this year. 

Size 20 yields a star 5.5" size 10 yields a star 7.25" and size 80 makes a star 4.25"

Three Flakes

These snowflakes appeared on Renulek's blog many years ago.  I always wanted to do them and this was the year. Renulek also has an Etsy page where you can purchase her designs. 

I used an ivory Coats size 20 vintage thread.  Each flake is created in three parts, three rounds with first round intertwined with the second. 

I have sent these off in an exchange arranged by the Fringe Element tatters so I will create three more for my own collection.

Test tat

I was asked to test tat a new little motif by Robin B a new tatting designer.   You can find a link to the pattern on her facebook Robin's Nest Tatting Designer page here. 

I love how it almost looks interwoven but it is not.  Just three little rounds.

I started on a chain and used a split ring to climb to the second round.  Then I added magic loops to the first and last chain and no ends to sew in.

Using a Coats thread size 20 the small doily measures 4.25 inches from point to point.

To start on a chain you can use a paper clip or one of those coiless safety pins.  You might try what I did by starting with an unflipped second half and then with a flipped second half counting as the first double stitch and you can remove your paperclip once the chain is completed. 

Nametag Be Nice

I have told many that I have a PhD; project half done, the truth is I have many PHD's.   This nametag is now completed.  It is quite long because I had to use the seven letters version because I don't approve of a shortened version of my name.  But if you remove the R then I am be nice.

The pattern is designed by Kathy Lowe and I have provided a link here.  She provides both five and seven letter patterns.  My sister wants one but her name is eight letters so I will use her three initials with a bead between.  Watch for this in your care package sis.

Garlic Rope

Maggie sent me a text a few days ago saying she would be in town on Saturday and wanted to know if we could get together, she had some tatting questions.   I  set aside a few hours to chat and tat.   She also asked me if I wanted some Garlic rope she had gotten really cheap.  "Sure", I replied, thinking  it was garlic.

When Maggie arrived I found it was the netting you put garlic into.  She brought me 10 yards/meters of the rope.  I had some  metallic thread asking to be wrangled as the balls don't stay wound once they are out of the bag.

I used a comparable to size 20 color 321 Turquoise Green Liz Metallic and tatted up this snowflake.  It is by Teri Dusenbury and called Wheel of Fortune.  You should be able to see a pattern on this page.
