Cluny Zipper Pull

This Cluny Zipper Pull was one of the classes I took at the Shuttlebirds Workshop a few weeks ago.  I actually finished the project and brought it to breakfast on Sunday morning before we left, alas that was the last I saw if it.  I hope it has found a good home.  So I wanted to make another to use in an exchange.

I didn't have a Cabone ring but searched my stash and found a plastic ring (I think this may have come off a bra strap) and used my nail file to remove rough edges. It was not the right size so I adjusted the pattern to fit.

The pattern is by Mimi Dillman who gave me many pointers regarding making cluny leaves at the workshop. I do need a few more years of practice though but happy that I can wind my hand without thinking and my leaves always close although not as pretty as hers.

I love using this vintage thread to make cluny leaves.  I don't know the name of it so if you recall please let me know.

  1. That looks wonderful. Love the variegated thread. Is it a published pattern? Mimi is so good at clunies. I hope she showed you the shortcut method of making your loom, where you pull the thread down.

    1. Oh yes she showed us a lot, but I like the "old fashioned way" of making the loom as it works for me. Not published yet.

  2. What a shame you lost your original! You've done a very good job of this one. I think it must be wonderful to have an expert show you just what to do, though yes, practice is always necessary.

  3. I'm not good at clunies but yours look amazing to me. My ambition now is to get as good as you and, perhaps one day even as good as Mimi although I think she's going to agree yours are very darn great.

    1. I had never taken a cluny class before, now I see where I need improvement. It will take a long time to be as good as Mimi.

  7. I recognise the thread, sorry I can't remember who made it, it might be coats, I know it was sold in a shop called Woolworth because I brought it in there back in the 1960s. I had an old aunt who used it to do tatted lace edging on hankys and I still have one somewhere. I used to sit and watch her for hours, she said she would teach me when I was older, yes well she died but I did remember enough to teach myself many years later.
I have not tried clunies I tend to shy away from them, perhaps one day I should as they say take the bull by the horn and try them. Yours are perfect I am in ore of yours
